UFC 284: Makhachev vs Volkanovski kicks off this Sunday morning at 3 am and we’ll be live over on the Youtube channel for the watch-along!
Our second pay-per-view of 2023 features the first ever #1 vs #2 in the pound-for-pound rankings. Islam Makhachev comes into the bout as the favourite, defending his title against the UFC featherweight champion and #1 pound-for-pound fighter: Alexander Volkanovski.
Both guys are coming off impressive wins in their last bouts, Makhachev finished Charles Oliveira at UFC 280 where Volkanovski put on a dominant display over Max Holloway to seal the trilogy. This promises to be an excellent matchup.
In the co-main event, the interim featherweight title is on the line between Yair “El Pantera” Rodriguez and Josh Emmett. Both guys are also coming off wins over Brian Ortega and Calvin Katter respectively. The winner of this is all but guaranteed a shot at Alexander Volkanovski once he returns to native weight class.
Impressive UFC newcomer Jack Della Maddalena comes into his main card bout against “Rudeboy” Randy Brown on an impressive 3 fight-winning streak with all of his wins coming in the first round. However, Brown is coming off a 4 fight-winning streak himself and is full of confidence coming into this weekend.
Justin Tafa hasn’t fought since 2021 and is coming into this main card fight against Parker Porter. Tafa beat Harry Hunsucker by head kick finish in the first round in an impressive display.
Parker Porter’s last fight saw him fall short to rising star Jailton Almeida where he was submitted in the first round. However, Justin Tafa is a different challenge to Almeida and he’ll be confident to get his UFC career back on track.
We open the main card with Aussie fan favourite Jimmy Crute taking on Alonzo Menifield. Crute is on a two-fight losing streak right now, however, the opponent quality must be taken into account as Anthony Smith and Jamahal Hill are two of the toughest light heavyweights on the planet.
“Atomic” Alonzo Menifield is on a two-fight winning streak with first-round finishes over Askar Mozharov and Misha Cirkunov gives him a shot at Jimmy Crute’s number 12 ranking.
