UFC 288, a timeline look as to how we got here

The last time we saw Henry Cejudo in the Octagon was at UFC 249 as he beat Dominick Cruz via TKO in the second round to defend his Bantamweight Title. He announced to the world that he’d be retiring and he vacated his belt.

Fast forward to UFC 251, Petr Yan beats Jose Aldo in a fairly one-sided fight to win the vacant belt. Aljamain Sterling was next in line for a shot after he beat Cory Sandhagen on the previous PPV within two minutes.

At UFC 259, we had one of the most stacked PPVs of all time. Adesanya went up to light heavyweight for a chance to become a double champ against Jan Błachowicz, Amanda Nunes defended her Featherweight title against Megan Anderson and the third title fight on the card was Petr Yan vs Aljamain Sterling.

In one of the more controversial title fights of recent times, Petr Yan threw one of the most blatant illegal knees, you’ll possibly ever see and Aljamain Sterling won the title via disqualification. A rematch had to happen.

The rematch went down at UFC 273. A razor-thin fight where Sterling got the decision to put any doubt to bed. He was the best in the division.

Sterling then ran through Dillashaw, all the while Henry Cejudo was watching, with talk of a return to featherweight, he’ll have to beat Sterling if he wants the shot at the apparent end goal against Alexander Volkanovski.
