UFC 289, a timeline look as to how we got here

UFC 269, 20 PPVs ago. Amanda Nunes went into her co-main event spot against Julianna Pena. Everyone assumed Nunes would steamroll Pena, that’s what she does.


But she doesn’t, The Venezuelan Vixen gets the submission victory in the second round in one of the biggest upsets the UFC has ever seen.


UFC 277, Julianna Pena puts her belt on the line in an immediate rematch. This time, Amanda Nunes puts out one of the most dominant displays of recent memory to get her belt back.


Two months later at UFC 279, a main card bout that went under the radar, Irene Aldana gets an upkick knockout over Macy Chiasson to solidify herself as a top contender in the Women’s Bantamweight division.


UFC 289 was originally slated to be Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Pena 3 to close out the trilogy, however, Pena drops out with injury and Irene Aldana steps in on a two-fight win streak.


In the co-main event, Charles Oliveira takes on Beneil Dariush in a number 1 contenders bout. Dariush, one of the most deserving fighters of a title shot in the entire UFC comes in on an eight-fight win streak with most notable recent wins over Mateusz Gamrot and Tony Ferguson at UFC 280 and UFC 262 respectively.


Charles Oliveira lost his belt last time out to Islam Makhachev, however, before that he beat the likes of Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler and Justin Gaethje to solidify himself as one of the toughest lightweights on the planet.
