UFC 290, a timeline look as to how we got here

UFC 290

Alexander Volkanovski gained the most a fighter could possibly gain from a loss at UFC 284 where he went up in weight to fight Islam Makhachev for the Lightweight belt. Despite losing a razor thin decision where many thought he won, he’s back at Featherweight to defend his title.

Yair Rodriguez, the challenger, currently holds the interim belt which he won on the same UFC 284 card as he beat Josh Emmett via a round 2 submission. He’s a tough challenge for anyone with his large variety of striking and kicks along with his slick submission skills.

In the co main event, another Mexican is contesting a belt in Brandon Moreno. Last time out, we saw Moreno beat Figueiredo in the first ever Quadrilogy in UFC history to close the chapter on that storyline. This saturday, Brandon Moreno is looking to close another chapter in the Flyweight division.

He takes on Alexandre Pantoja who’s already beaten Moreno twice in the past. There’s bad blood here and is the closest title fight in recent history.

The rest of the UFC 290 main card involves high profile fights between Robert Whittaker and Dricus Du Plessis, Dan Hooker and Jalin Turner and Bo Nickal and short notice newcomer Valentine Woodburn.
