UFC 293, a timeline look as to how we got here

UFC 293

As Israel Adesanya knocked out Alex Pereira to reclaim his Middleweight strap, all eyes turned to Australia's already-announced UFC 293 event with Izzy the likely main event fighter.

Adesanya and Pereira look to be on a collision course for a trilogy fight at light heavyweight in the future, so the UFC decided against booking an immediate rematch. So the hunt was on to find Izzy an opponent for September 10th.

Sean Strickland has had a different route however. The number 1 contender is Dricus Du Plessis and looks likely to have his shot at the belt next. Strickland is coming off wins over Nassourdine Imavov and Abus Magomedov which cemented himself as the next guy in the rankings that made sense for Izzy to face.

Whittaker and Vettori are both coming off losses, Du Plessis is injured and Cannonier recently lost to Adesanya. Strickland was the next guy in line and he deserves his shot. The only case for Cannonier was that he beat Strickland in December last year, however, it was a very close fight in which some fans had Strickland edging it.

The watch-along for UFC 293 kicks off at 3 am on Sunday morning, don’t watch alone, watch along.
